The Unicorns of Saen
The unicorns of Saen (IE, those playable on Nelle Rovine) are of the species Unicornus Saeni, divided into distinct sub-species, capable of interbreeding with each other. To describe them as being horse-like fails to tell the whole truth: they are a distinct type of creature, possessing some horse-like attributes and some attributes of other ungulates. The larger breeds more heavily resemble horses than the smaller breeds, and even then, the comparison is not precise.
Each breed has developed its own culture (and some have had even smaller sub-breeds split from them), and those cultures generally frown upon intermingling with other breeds, at least until this point (which is still not widely accepted). As a result, mixed-breeds (sometimes called taintbloods) are not particularly common, and are usually ostracised from the herd of their birth, with increased difficulty in being accepted into another group.
Unicorn Genetics are unique, and the genetics of mix-breeding even more so. A mixed-breed will usually not lose the defining traits of its parent-breeds until the second or third generation of mixing, though exceptions occour. The powers of mixed-breeds tend to be more sporadic than that of their parent breeds, as well. It is exceedingly rare for them to have the powers of both breeds, although it is just as uncommon to have the powers of neither. More likely, a lower functioning of either or both is achieved. Sometimes, however, the powers become involuntarily linked, so that one cannot be used without using the other, or any number of unusual scenarios.
The information provided in the breed pages below is the standard of the breed. However, mutations do occour (but need to be explained). The coloring patterns mentioned are not hard-and-fast rules (save for the Masse's tricolor and the Pellame's mask), but rather general trends. Unicorns can come in nearly any color or pattern in the universe, so there's no such thing as "too outlandish." Perhaps "really gaudy," but that's another matter entirely.
As a small observation, horns of all breeds tend to be smaller and blunter until around the time that weaning starts, at around 6 months of age. It's around this point that the unicorns begin to be recognizably of "human intelligence," such as being capable of forming speech or other cognitive abilities.
Creating a New Breed
Disclaimer: We strongly, strongly, strongly reccomend you do not attempt this until you are settled, with a character, and posting. Breeds take a long time, if ever, to be approved, and are very rarely accepted besides.
To create a new breed, send the following information to Deme:
Breed Name
Build type
Hoof type
Horn type
Mane type
Tail type
Feathering
Coloration
Aging Patterns
Power(each breed gets 1)
Other physical traits
Culture(hierarchy, religion, gestures, that sort of thing)
And what sort of area they come from, explaining why there aren't many of them.
She will review your submission and decide if it is worth considering on the next level. If it is, at next opportunity she will send it to Chilmark/Cheka, who will look it over, and it will be discussed. If it is deemed worthy, Deme will send it back with a list of needed edits. And back and forth your submission will be sent, until at last it is ready to be put up. The likelihood of your submission going through the whole process is very slim.
