The World

GEOGRAPHY
Saen is a world much akin to earth. It is round and floats in an orbit around a sun, and has a single moon orbiting that effects tides and so forth. We can only assume its core is molten, for their are volcanoes, tectonic plates, earthquakes and so on. Not all of its seas are made of salt water like our own: there are a few in very far south which are made wholly of fresh water.

The area we are concerned with is the western hemisphere, dominated by a single continent that stretches out and becomes slightly thinner just north of the equator. Whether or not this is the sole habitat of unicorns remains unknown. It contains a vast variety of different environments, a few of them actually authentically magical. The rest of them are just magical in the same way a sunrise is, unless you live in that particular sprawling vista (then you'd say it's just the same old sunrise over the crater, gardens like the dawn of creation, et cetera).

The Ruins is the alluvial plains around the River Lethe, an area formerly settled by humans. The actual ruins remaining do not appear to have been abandoned for 500 years. We're not sure how that works. The climate is humid subtropical, containing a long, hot, humid summer and a mild, wet, and short winter.

POPULATION DISTRIBUTION
Once inhabited by not one but three sapient species, Saen's other two species, dragons and humans, vanished over half a millennium ago, and no one knows exactly why. Well, they do, of course, assuming they still exist, but no one else does. Whether they are hiding on the other side of the world, or if they have truly gone extinct, is unclear. People suggest magic is involved. Both races have left behind ruins, skeletons hidden in the ground, and memories.

The 5 most common types of unicorns seem to be spread out willy-nilly, and more or less fight immediately with whatever breed happens to be closest to the individual herd in question. This may mean that a Veleno from a particular area would be more inclined to hate Oreilles specifically, while another Veleno from another area might have a special loathing for Ramas. It's all fairly random.

Traveling herds, sometimes composed of multiple breeds, are not as rare an occurrence as one would think. They are largely temporary groups, walking around until a member can find a new herd. And then they keep walking with one less member, and so on. Some unicorns end up staying there their whole lives, and no one says anything, really.

MAGIC
Magic is a tricky subject, considering that the breeds each have a special ability. Magic in this case is defined as some ability, knowledge, or power that cannot normally be achieved by a member of the species in question. This is not the colloquial definition: for most unicorns, it just refers to anything that can't be explained, like thunder. Real magic is, practically by definition, hard to find, and its encounter is a once in a lifetime experience. Actual magic, as an energy to be harnessed, flows around in at least 4 dimensions, following the lines of the physical plane. This creates a sort of "magic lake" in some areas, such as certain deep forests, deserts, mountain peaks, and the ocean.

FAUNA
The Ruins has the sort of fauna you would expect for the area, of course, but because this is Saen, it has a few additions and omissions (for example, there are no dolphins in Saen). It is, however, worth noticing that no Saeni animal is exactly like its Earth-born equivalent; The differences, however, are usually minimal enough that employing a new common name would be a waste of time. First and foremost, its waters are inhabited by brackish-water giant catfish, most of which live in the Salten Sea. For some reason, there are none in the River Lethe or Lake Imbifer, although they can survive in fresh water; humans once presumed that something scared them away. These ancient fish might actually be the smartest things alive, since they've never gotten involved with the unicorns' dispute, as humans and dragons did.
Predatory marsupials, similar to Earth's thylacines, exist in greater density on Saen than on earth. Creatures found only in Earth's eastern hemisphere, such as lions and leopards, also exist in Saen's western continent. The floodplains of the Lethe also harbor a highly predatory, two-tailed mammal known as the marsh hound, which survives in the wetlands preying on birds and any available mammals. The dire beaver, and its cousin the dire nutria, have also made themselves at hope in the delta. Both species are carnivorous and hostile, perfectly willing to attack larger creatures.
The area of The Ruins includes most animals (and the aforementioned additions) that one could assume for an Earth Subtropical Swamp-Forest-and-Marshland sort of area, including a number of venomous snakes and spiders and the inevitable alligators, as well as other things less likely to kill.
Introduced fauna still remain around the ruins. The feral descendants of the human inhabitants' livestock include chickens, dogs, cats, peacocks, and pigs. Horses and sheep appear to have vanished with the humans.

FLORA
The plant life of the ruins is typical for the biosphere. Trees include live oaks, cypress, magnolias, dogwoods, and crape myrtles. Other notable plant species include the ubiquitous graybeard moss *cough*spanishmoss*cough* (which festoons the older trees), irises, ferns of all sorts, bulrushes and cattails, pitcher-plants, and innumerable forest wildflowers. There has so far been noted one plant unique to Saen, known as the Moonflower Tree. It is an evergreen, needle-leafed tree with white flowers, blooming only in the dead of winter.
